My name is Dr. Ann Studer and I am the parent of a transgender kiddo. I helped my son to transition to live as the boy he is when he was just a new four-year-old. I was scared as hell, had to bust through layers of denial, and was afraid to leave the house every day wondering who we would run into. I had to “come out" to dozens of friends and family over the course of a year and after weeks of hearing myself say that the process was “dizzying", I manifested an intense case of vertigo.
And, oh my goodness, did I feel alone! I was a single mom (still am) and had very little support as there were so few transgender kiddos allowed to transition at that time. I was on the front edge of this final frontier of the civil rights movement. And there were very few resources and very few people who knew my pain.
But that doesn’t have to be the case for you and your family! I am here to hold your hand as you move through this process of figuring out your child’s needs… at your own pace. You may not yet know if your child is transgender or gender creative, but you may want help navigating the tidal wave of emotions and steps involved along the path to helping your child find happiness.
And in so doing, you will find happiness. And peace. Your home can be light again and full of laughter as all members of the family settle into place. But first must come the transition…both for your child and for your family. There is hard work to be done but as my therapist said to me many times… Doing the right thing is the hardest thing.
